Rubilen Amit is the 2024 Women's World 9-Ball Champion!

Filipino pool fans are ecstatic and proud to congratulate Rubilen Amit for winning the 2024 Massé WPA Women's World 9-Ball Championship! She defeated Chinese star Siming Chen in 4 sets on Sunday morning in the tournament held in Hamilton, New Zealand. 

Amit is now a three-time WPA World Championship title holder after having won two World 10-Ball titles back in 2009 and 2013. She secured the coveted 9-Ball crown in a controversial format wherein matches are played in short sets. The preliminary rounds were best-of-three affairs, while the final was a best-of-five, with each player needing to secure 4 racks to win a set. 

Much has been said about the format, with some saying that the short race per set favors the weaker players. However, the names that got through to the latter stages of the tournament would prove otherwise. In the semis, Chen defeated Japan's Chihiro Kawahara before facing Amit in the final, while the eventual champion had to find her way through multiple European title holder Kristina Tkach in the other semi-final match.

Other former champions like Kelly Fisher, Jasmin Ouschan, Liu Shasha, Wei Tzu-Chien and Chezka Centeno also went fairly deep into the tournament. 

Amit has won the $50,000 top prize. A well-deserved reward after years of hard work. At this point, amid all the hype that surrounded the summer games, it's time to question once more why pool sports are not included in the Olympics. In any case, I can only hope that our freshly-minted 9-Ball champion will receive as much recognition as our Olympians. 

2014 PartyPoker Mosconi Cup : Wilson names USA Squad

FOLLOWING ON from his appointment in January, 2014 USA PartyPoker Mosconi Cup captain MARK WILSON today names his squad of eight players who will be tasked with winning pool’s most prestigious team trophy for the first time since 2009.

Wilson has opted for a blend of experience and youth and his eight-man squad will be reduced down to the five who will travel to Blackpool, England at the end of November to contest the 21st annual Mosconi Cup.

Head of the pack and named as one of his two vice-captains is SHANE VAN BOENING, who will be making his eighth appearance in the event. The 30 year-old South Dakota native said, "I have been looking forward to another chance to win in the biggest setting. Winning is what I am focused on every day, and I want this one more than ever.”

Wilson added, “He routinely excels against the strongest players and deepest fields.  He exemplifies the work ethic, sportsmanship, and proficiency expected from all members of the team.  Team USA could not have a better leader on the table.”

Looking to make his second appearance in the Mosconi Cup after being a member of the team that successfully retained the trophy in 2006 is ‘Mr 400’ JOHN SCHMIDT. The 40 year old, now residing in California, is the oldest member of the squad and is thrilled at the prospect, "Being chosen for this Team USA and the chance to play for a Mosconi Cup is the most humbling experience and the biggest honor of my life."

Looking to make his eighth appearance is Prince of Pool, COREY DEUEL, who is hoping to add to his three Mosconi Cup wins.

"The last time that I played was the last time that the US won and I have some new ideas to offer for preparation of this year's team - concepts that I will share with every team member. The Blackpool venue is so inspiring that I can hardly wait for December."

The fourth member of the squad is 30 year-old BRANDON SHUFF who received a Mosconi Cup baptism of fire at the York Hall on his only previous appearance in 2012.

"This guy has a ton of heart along with a great work ethic, and will be primed for a great year,” said Wilson. “He puts himself out there by playing many events throughout the US and I am pleased to have him on the team."

The first of the potential debutants is the highly-rated JUSTIN HALL, the 26 year-old from Palm Harbor, Florida.

"I have known of this kid’s talent and all-round skills for years, and now is the time that all of his previous success and experience will make the difference," said Wilson.

A proven champion at both banks and one-pocket, Hall is determined to take his chance, “I always wanted to make the Mosconi Cup team, and now that the opportunity is here, I will further intensify my training. I love being under pressure to perform and am looking forward to both the challenge to make the final five, and the opportunity to win on the biggest stage."

Another Mosconi Cup veteran hoping to return to the fray is California’s OSCAR DOMINGUEZ, who was part of 2009’s winning team on his only other appearance.

"The pinnacle of my career was the 2009 Mosconi Cup victory; it was quite an amazing experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the team in 2014,” said Dominguez.

Wilson added, "Oscar epitomizes the new face of the sport - positivity, work ethic, passion, and great attitude. I played many times against his father Ernesto, and I knew this kid would be an ideal candidate. Beyond being respectful he is just the kind of guy that I would want by my side in combat.”

The second rookie in the squad is 26 year-old JUSTIN BERGMAN who hails from Fairview Heights in Illinois. Justin has many regional victories and one major tournament win in the One Pocket division at the Southern Classic in 2012.

"Justin has been a good player since childhood; able to break and run out a rack on a 9' table since he was just 11 years-old. Given his recent form he will generate some real excitement and quite possibly shake up the pool hierarchy,” said Mark Wilson.

Bergman added, "I have only dreamed of ever making Team USA and going to the Mosconi Cup. I have been very dedicated the last couple of years and feel that I am improving and getting results. This is the next step."

The final piece in the Team USA jigsaw puzzle is Connecticut-based rookie JEREMY SOSSEI. One of the strongest players in the northeast, he has many regional tournament victories, and strong showings against some of the best players in the world.

The 34 year-old said, "Getting the call to possibly represent the USA in the Mosconi Cup has been a dream come true. I'm ecstatic! I've been working hard on my game the last couple of years and I believe I'm ready. With team work we can get the Cup back."

  

As well as Shane Van Boening, Mark Wilson has named DON WARDELL MD as his second Vice-Captain.

The 60 year-old is a practicing physician with a passion for billiards. Wardell has a strong interest in billiards history, sports medicine, training techniques, and biomechanics. He will be assisting Mark Wilson throughout the preparation over the coming months as well as in Blackpool when the event gets underway.

THERE were wins for three of the fancied teams at the 888.com World Cup of Pool as England B, Holland and the Philippines all made their way into the second round as play continued at the York Hall in London.

The Philippines pair of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza closed out the evening beating Croatia – Karlo Dalmatin and Ivica Putnik – 7-4. The Croatians were in with a chance as they stayed with their opponents in the early stages, but a succession of errors saw the team spirit drain away.

With a strong Filipino contingent in the crowd, including the Ambassador, the duo from Manila completed the win.

In the second match, England B – Chris Melling and Daryl Peach – were big favourites against a Portuguese team making their 888.com World Cup of Pool debut and they justified the bookmaker’s faith with a scrappy 7-4 win to book a second round game against Germany.

It wasn’t their greatest showing but if getting into the second round was their goal, they achieved it. They took the early 3-0 lead, but then Melling failed to get out of a snooker and with ball in hand, Portugal reduced the deficit. The Portuguese pair of Manual Gama and Guilherme Sousa started to shed their early nerves and after a poor miss on the brown 7 by Melling they got the score back to 3-4.

They shared the next two racks and at 5-4 down, Portugal had every chance of springing an upset. However, they couldn’t capitalise on it and the English pair held their nerve to get over the line

“Most players only play a table as quick as this in Matchroom events. It is a quality table and I don’t think you can find a table as quick as that,” said Melling.

“Most people at home don’t understand the pressure you are under. At the end of the day as long as you win that is main thing. We will both go back and assess our game because we both made some mistakes but we both made some great shots as well and that is the beauty of pool.”

Peach added, “It is a little bit nerve wracking but it’s nice to get the first match and the first win under your belt.”

Earlier, Holland, with the dependable duo of Niels Feijen and Nick Van den Berg, took out Scotland 7-2 to advance to the last 16. With a wealth of scotch doubles experience, both in the Mosconi Cup and this event, they always had a little too much for the Scottish team comprised of American-based up and comer Jayson Shaw and seasoned vet Jonni Fulcher.

 Feijen was delighted to get through what could potentially have been a banana skin; “It was the first match of the tournament and we had to get used to the table as it slides a lot and also the lights and the crowd.

“We grew in confidence though after both teams made a couple of mistakes. We’re a good doubles pair and have got a lot of experience and at this venue where we both helped take down the Mosconi Cup last December. Hopefully we can keep it going.”

The 2013 888.com World Cup of Pool runs from Tuesday September 17 to Sunday, September 22 at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, East London. The field features 32 teams from 31 countries in a single elimination format. The total prize fund is US$250,000 with $60,000 going to the eventual champions.

2013 888.com World Cup of Pool: First Session Completes With Wins for Three Favourites

Defending champions Finland – Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen - are through to the second round of the 888.com World Cup of Pool following a comfortable 7-2 win over Austria as the six-day tournament got underway at the York Hall in East London.

                            

They won five racks in a row from 2-1 down to seal victory, after Austria, represented by Jasmine and Albin Ouschan, looked set to go 3-1 ahead. Jasmine, though, miscued pocketing the brown 7 and lost position. Trying to catch up left her with a tough cut on the 9 ball which she left in the jaws of the corner pocket.

After that the tide turned as the confident Finnish duo sprinted for the line.

“It’s always tough in the first match. We were a bit jittery and they had a chance for 3-1 but it was a tough one for Jasmine on the 9 and she jarred it. We got in control, didn’t look back and closed door,” said Mika Immonen.

“We’re happy to get over the first hurdle. It was nerve-wracking but we’re just trying to stay positive for next match.” He added.

The 2013 888.com World Cup of Pool runs from Tuesday September 17 to Sunday, September 22 at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, East London. Korea (Ham Won Sik and Ryu Seung Woo), a semi-finalist in Manila in 2011, progressed to the round of 16 with a win over European qualifiers Estonia made up of Erki Erm and Dennis Grabe. It was an error-strewn match that never looked like catching fire and there were countless ball in hand opportunities in the first half of the game, as neither side really took advantage of them.

The Koreans though surged ahead in the closing stages to take the match and can look forward to a round two match against Finland.

The final match of the session saw Germany put paid to Maltese hopes with a 7-4 win. The German pair of veteran Ralf Souquet and debutant Dominic Jentsch were fancied from the off but soon found themselves 4-1 down to Tony Drago and Alex Borg.

As with most turnarounds, it hinged on a single incident when Tony Drago, thinking that the Germans had made no contact with the object ball, picked the cue ball up and positioned it.

However, there was no such foul committed, and the ball in hand went to the Germans who converted the rack. From there, they didn’t miss as they took the next five for the victory.

Commented Souquet, “The score was 4-1 to them and we were hoping for mistake as we just couldn’t get going. They had some nice easy outs so we had to hope for something but didn’t expect that!

“We’re going to relax and try and stay focused as our next match won’t be any easier. We will work on our game, mainly on our breaks but when it comes to shooting we are ready,” he added.

2013 World Cup of Pool: Philippines up for the job

WITH THE 2013 World Cup of Pool set to take place in London from 17-22 September, it’s no surprise that leading UK bookmaking firm William Hill have installed the super-talented Filipino pairing of Dennis Orcollo and Lee Vann Corteza as joint favourites at 8/1 along with the USA.

The deadly duo from Manila, currently world ranked #2 and #3 respectively, are certainly one of the in-form pairs competing for the $60,000 top prize when 32 two-player teams from all over the world convene at the York Hall for the six day event.

Although the Philippines have won this event on two occasions in its seven year history, both times it was the pairing of Pinoy pool legends Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante who claimed the glory.

The nearest Orcollo has come was a runners-up spot in 2010 when he and Roberto Gomez were well beaten by China, while Corteza will be making his second appearance in the competition after partnering Orcollo in Manila in 2012.

Last September, with the weight of expectation on their shoulders, they flopped, going down 8-7 to a giant-killers Switzerland in the first round.

“I am very honoured to be given another chance to represent the Philippines in the World Cup of Pool,” said Corteza.

“To be honest, last year was like a blur and it was over before we knew it. The pressure from our home crowd was a little too much to handle but hopefully this time we can perform better.”

There will certainly be plenty of Filipinos in the crowd when Corteza and Orcollo break off against Croatia on the opening night but it will be nothing to compare to the stifling pressure of 3,000 countrymen willing every ball into the pockets.

Orcollo added, “We feel a bit more confident away from home but it would be great if there were some of our countrymen cheering us on.

“Playing in the World Cup is always a thrill and this is my fifth consecutive year with four different partners. My dream is to finally raise the Cup this year together with Lee Vann. We are more mature, a little more confident and we are very hungry to win this one.”

“It’s certainly one of the best tournaments on the calendar and when you’re playing for your country it always means a little bit more.”

2013 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup: Souquet named as first European player

RALF SOUQUET will break yet another record this December when he dons the blue European shirt to do battle in the 20th annual PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

It will be the German’s 16th time as a member of Team Europe and cements his existing record for the leading number of appearances by a European player in pool’s No.1 event.

And when the tournament gets underway on Monday 2nd December, Souquet will be looking to improve upon two other Mosconi records he currently holds – all-time number of wins (45), and more matches played by any European player (75).

“The Mosconi Cup is by far the best event out there in the world of billiards and there are hardly any words to explain how big and important this tournament is,” said a delighted Souquet.

“I don't know my team mates yet but no matter who will join our team, captain Johan Ruijsink will make us work hard and fight for our lives to keep the Cup in Europe, and win this prestigious event for the 4th time in a row.”

In total, Souquet has been on the winning side five times in his 15 Mosconi Cup outings and it will be his fifth visit to Las Vegas to represent his continent.

“Playing in the Mirage in Las Vegas will be special as well because that's the place where I won the Challenge of Champions back in 1996. It won't be an easy task though because the American team will fight their hearts out as well, especially on home soil.

“Having played already 15 times for team Europe, it brings back a lot of memories. Some are better than others but when I sealed the deal for our team in Las Vegas in 2007, it was definitely one of the best moments.

“I was only scared for a moment when team mate Tony Drago stormed into the arena and wrestled me to the floor to celebrate the victory!” he added.

Souquet will be in action at his old stomping ground of the York Hall in London from 17-22 September when along with Dominic Jentsch, he competes for Germany in the World Cup of Pool.  The scotch doubles format will prove ideal as they attempt to regain the trophy they last won in 2011.

Ga Young Kim to Captain Team Asia in Queens Cup!

South Korea’s Ga Young Kim has been selected as the Captain of Team Asia at the inaugural Queens Cup. The East vs West team showdown between the world’s greatest lady professional billiards players will take place November 5th-7th,2013. The event is produced by Dragon Promotions which has signed on OB Cues as the Official Cue of the Queens Cup.

"I really envied the guys because they have their own yearly team event, so I was really happy to hear about the Queens Cup.  I'm very excited for all the women because we have our own annual rivalry now. I think this a really important event for women's billiards to help encourage more players and grow pool further", said Ga Young Kim, the current reigning Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Champion. She adds, "Now we have a lot of young people in Asia that are coming out now to play. There's more skill in the game, and that's why I'm happy we are playing 10-Ball in Queens Cup. There is less luck especially on the break, so everyone will have to play good to win. This will help determine who's better in the East or West."

The Queens Cup creator and producer Charlie Williams of Dragon Promotions explains the captain selection. “When it came to select the Captain of Team Asia, there really wasn't much question on who the pick would be. Ga Young Kim is the most decorated Asian women’s player in history. She is one of the very few Asian women who has won major championships on both sides of the pond. A 2x US Open champion and 3x World Champion with being the only Asian woman to hold the World Championship in both 9-Ball and 10-Ball. So it’s a statistical fact she is the absolute best Asian women’s player by far in the history of pool. And she’s only 30!”

The Queens Cup will showcase the rivalry between the Asians and their western counterparts in Europe and USA, much similar to the Ryder Cup in golf or Davis Cup in tennis. The absolute best ladies from their respective countries and continents will be selected for the teams. The event will last 3 days in a 10-Ball format that will race to the first team reaching 10 matches for the win. Style of play will include singles, doubles, triples, and 4-on-4. Captains will be put to the test to best strategize partnerships and chemistry of match-ups.

2013 World Cup of Pool- England B is Peach and Melling

WITH THE home nation allowed two teams in the forthcoming World Cup of Pool, the second England side will comprise 2007 World Pool Champion Daryl Peach and Chris Melling, last year’s Mosconi Cup MVP.

They will be joining England A - Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes – in the 32 team draw for the $250,000 team event which is now entering its eighth year. Taking place for the first time in England, the World Cup will be staged at the York Hall in London, where the Mosconi Cup has taken place on eight raucous occasions.

Commented Daryl Peach, “It's great to be back where I belong, in the World Cup of Pool, especially being alongside Chris Melling.”

Peach, who played in the inaugural World Cup with Steve Davis in 2006, came close in 2008 with Mark Gray when they finished runners-up to the USA in Rotterdam.

“Both Chris and I have our eyes firmly set on going one step further this year. There are lots of other great teams with great partnerships too, but being on home soil, at the legendary York Hall will separate the men from the boys! Let’s get it on!”

Melling, who competed in the last two World Cups in the Philippines, said; “I'm really pleased to be invited once again to the World Cup, and like Daryl I think we have a great chance of winning this event.

2013 World Cup of Pool Appleton and Boyes are England A

WITH THE World Cup of Pool taking place in England for the first time in the eight year history of the event, established international stars Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes will be making up the England A team for their assault on the most prestigious title in team pool.

World No.1 Appleton, who represented England in the World Cup in 2009, ‘11 and ’12, is the reigning World 9 Ball champion as well as back-to-back winner of the 2010 and ’11 US Open.

“I’m delighted to finally be playing with Karl and the main reasons are that we have a great record playing doubles and winning money matches in Philippines”, said Appleton.

“We also played great when we won World Team Championships and we’ve also played some doubles in English 8 ball.

“We gel together which is very important, and he listens to his captain! To be in the York Hall will be awesome and myself and Karl have got some great memories from the 2010 Mosconi Cup when we both played well and won our doubles.

“It's going to be carnage and England A or B are going to be tough to beat and I for one can't wait. I’m convinced this is the year England finally triumphs.”

Blackpool-based Boyes will be making his second appearance in the event having partnered Daryl Peach in 2010 when the England side were ignominiously dumped out of the competition by France.

“I am very happy to have been invited me back to play in the World Cup of Pool,” said the 2010 World 8 Ball Champion.

“In my eyes Matchroom sports events are the pinnacle of our sport and when I don't play in them I find it hard to concentrate all year round. So to be back with an opportunity and with my long time friend Darren has given me the boost I needed.

“I feel myself and Darren could well be the first English team to pick up the title. When you have the best two players from England playing with each other, it's a dangerous combo and the other teams will know this,” he added.

England B will be announced next week as well as other stars from the world of pool who will be competing in the event.

THE WORLD CUP OF POOL will be making its long-awaited debut in London as pocket billiards’ premier international team event goes to the York Hall from 17-22 September for its thrilling eighth edition.

There are a total of 32 teams competing with 31 nations represented – host nation England has two sides in the event. The defending champions are Finland as Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen and they will be looking to become the first team ever to retain the title.

Queens Cup Brings the Greatest Rivalry of Women's Pool

Chicago, IL - The wait is over. In November of this year, the world's greatest women players will be showcased like never before in an event that Dragon Promotions has been working on for nearly 2 years. It will be East versus West as Dragon Promotions is thrilled to announce its newest event creation, The Queens Cup!

The Queens Cup will be the very first time that the best women in the West will take on the best women in Asia in a dramatic format that will take 3 days to determine the outcome. Four women will be selected from Europe and the USA while another four women will be selected to represent Asia. The format will be versatile including 4-on-4s , Triples, Doubles, and Singles matches. Each team will have to play every which way possible and strategy will be crucial. The first team to reach 10 match wins will be victorious. All matches will be 10-Ball.

Renowned writer and publisher of Billiards Digest and Bowler's Journal, Mike Panozzo says, "The women's game really emerged when European players joined the U.S. Players on the WPBA Tour. Now the game is dominated by the talented Asian stars. Will a combination of American and European players be enough to topple the powerful Asians? Not sure, but it should be a lot of fun watching them pull together as a team to try."



"This is a pool fan's dream come true. To get all the best women together and settle which side has the best players has been an argument for the past few years", said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions. "Producing the Women's World 10-Ball the past four years we have seen two Asian World Champions and two western World Champions. Four different players from four different countries. This event will help settle which side is stronger once and for all. At least for a year!"

"We wanted this to be the ultimate test for the women. So we created the best format we could invent using 10-Ball in a versatile format. The rules cater to the top professionals including a forced hard break rule.  There won't be any room for excuses or fluff, just plain, hardnosed pool action. Every woman in the Queens Cup will have to bring their A+ game", explains Charlie Williams.

Most of the players have already been contracted and will be announced soon. But the one player that will be announced now is the selection of the Captain of the West Team. And that is , of course, the world #1, Ms.Kelly Fisher of England.

"I was absolutely thrilled when I first heard this event was going to take place! This is something very different and unique. The dynamics are really great and could really draw big media attention to women's pool. I feel the Queens Cup could really, really grow into a huge event," says Kelly Fisher. Kelly is a Two-Times World Champion and is considered to be the most dominant women's player in the world currently.

2013 World Cup of Pool Event set for London debut

AFTER FOUR years in Manila and two in Rotterdam, the eighth annual World Cup of Pool will be making a welcome return to UK shores when it takes place at the historic York Hall, Bethnal Green in London from 17th to 22nd September.

Following on from last year’s victory in the Philippines, the Finnish pair of Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen will back to defend their title at a venue that has gained a place in pool folklore following a 16 year association with the Mosconi Cup.

With 32 two-player teams representing 31 countries chasing the lion’s share of the $250,000 prize fund, there will be plenty of teams in with a shout. That will include two from the home country who will sure to be well supported in the East London pocket billiards mecca.

The event will be played to a single elimination format over six days with two sessions a day. In addition to the home nation and defending champions, all of the strongest countries in world pool will be sending teams and that includes the Philippines, Holland, Germany, China, the USA and Taiwan.

 Promoters Matchroom Sport will be building the exact same arena as that used at the Mosconi Cup and will be looking to generate a similar atmosphere as the tournament progresses.

Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn said, “After six years on the road, we thought the time was right to bring the World Cup back to the UK and with its Mosconi Cup connotations, the York Hall seemed the perfect choice for a venue.

“Being in London, it will give teams as well as fans the opportunity to sample this wonderful city and we will be hoping for massive crowds throughout the week.

“Aside from all the big guns, the World Cup has had its fair share of lesser nations go all out for glory – Poland last year, and Thailand in 2011 almost managed to pull off famous victories.

“All in all this will be a feast of top class pool that no European cue sports fan can afford to miss!” he added.

The World Cup of Pool will carry a $250,000 prize fund including $60,000 for the champions. The event will be produced by Matchroom Sport Television who will be making 31 x 1 hour programmes of the tournament for international syndication.

Efren Bata Reyes Tours Bangkok

With the help of our good friend Allan Chua from Thailand, pool fans in Bangkok were given a rare treat a couple of weeks ago. The one and only pool legend, Efren "Bata" Reyes was invited to do a tour around Bangkok to showcase his talent and play a couple of friendly racks with fans as well as play a couple of exhibition matches.



On the first day of the tour, Molly Malone's, a lovely Irish Pub hosted us for dinner and Efren played some racks with the patrons of the place.

After that, we were ushered out to another place, this time a proper pool hall instead of a pub and the atmosphere was electric! Loads of pool fans were waiting for Efren and we also bumped into a bunch of Filipinos which is always a good thing. 

This kid caught Efren's attention immediately. It looks like more and more young players are being developed in Thailand!

There were some interesting Murals all over the walls at Hustler's.

The second day brought us to a new Pub called The Game. This time, I suggested that we play 8-ball instead of 9-ball and make it three racks for each of the participants so that they get better chances. (I kinda felt bad for those who didn't get a shot in from the previous night since it was only one rack each).

Efren played with several people and even joined two rounds of killers which he both lost! 

I had my usual fish n' chips (I know, I know that's not really Irish). And of course, how could we resist a proper ice cold San Miguel Beer. This one is brewed and bottled in Thailand!

Everything was perfect until I ordered some water and they brought me this. Oh my. what a mistake. I guess, I'm sticking to the beer all night!

The last day of the tour was dedicated to challenge matches. Efren was scheduled to play against top Thai player Kobkit Palajin and Stuart Petman

In the end, Efren outclassed both players and won easily. We were treated to a great celebration af a place I dare not mention.

ABP Statement on the World 10-ball in Manila

Dear ABP Pro Player,

As the only unified body of professional players worldwide, we feel obligated to protect the interests of all professional pocket billiard players.
Thus we must inform you that we have investigated and researched info on this year's men's World 10-Ball in Manila Oct 8-14th which is sanctioned by the WPA, and they have informed us this year's event in October is NOT requiring the promoter Raya Sports to have the money in advance with the WPA. This info was not included in your info sheet for the event. We recommend you confirm this with your national federation.

Previously, the WPA did announce last year it would hold Raya Sports prize money in advance due to several incidents of lack of payments and extreme tardiness which affected many of you members.

Our local association partners in the Philippines has also notified us that there are no confirmed sponsors as of yet for the event, and they are withholding their players participation until money is secured. Also STAR Billiards, a partner of the event every year, announced last week it will not sponsor the event unless the full prize money is secured. Because most of you will be traveling very far and must secure hotel and flight in advance, it is important for us to make you fully aware of any pertinent news on this.

Please note that this email is not demanding you to not play, nor is it discouraging you to participate. This email is to simply share important info and to protect the interest of the professional players. Any of our players are free to play in the event, but we wish everyone to travel there to know , that as for now, there is no guarantee or protection of finances and prize money by the WPA nor any association for players traveling to the Philippines men's World 10-Ball .

Reyes, Bustamante Reunite for World Cup of Pool. Orcollo teams up with Corteza

Two-time World Cup of Pool Champions Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante will revive their celebrated partnership to launch yet another World Cup of Pool campaign. The pair won the first-ever staging of the even back n 2006 and again in 2009. The event takes place from Sept 4-9 at the Robinson's Place Manila.

Being fast friends off the table undoubtedly helps them maintain a partnership that is tough to defeat. In yesterday's press conference, Reyes points out that many young players nowadays are capable of beating them beacuse of their superior physical condition and accurate shot-making. However, the other teams recognize that a strong partnership and deep knowledge of each other's playing styles are big advantages that the older pair possess.

Efren Reyes is also a back-to-back World Mixed Doubles champion with Rubilen Amit. This just proves that the man is not only a great player but is also an ideal doubles partner. His understanding of the game and his ability to adjust and manipulate the game to suit his partner's strengths and weaknesses make his doubles game a notch above the rest.

Meanwhile, after several hits and misses over the years most notable of which is last year's semi-final, Dennis Orcollo has found a new partner in Lee Vann Corteza for this year's tournament. This is a well-anticipated pair-up and one which the local and foreign fans alike have high hopes for.

Doubles quickly negates individual talents since personalities and varying strategies can change the way the game is played. Orcollo pairs up with Corteza for the first time and surprises are expected from the dynamic pair. Both are known to be introverts in the tour but this might just work to their advantage. Dennis mentioned last year that it is easier to just let your partner do his thing and shoot what you are left with rather than fussing over each shot.

The other teams also fielded their best teams but most notable of which is the unknown pair fielded by Chinese Taipei. Despite the success and fanfare around the adorable Ko brothers last year, They are bringing in  Han En Hsu and Hsing Ting Chen. Who? I don't know them either but hey, If there is anything that I've learned in many years in this industry, The Taiwanese are always a threat. This new pair is definitely one to watch.

Defending champions Germany composed of Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann looked upbeat and ready for their title defense. Last year Souquet swept the back-to-back Matchroom events in the country and have gained legions of Filipino fans yet again. However, I can't promise that the fans won't be rabid once their team faces the local bets.  Ralf pointed out during the presscon that he's hoping for more sportsmanship from the fans this year. Haha. Sorry Ralf. not gonna happen but hey, It doesn't mean they don't love you too. In the end they will still be huge fans of yours and will support you. Bashing you while you play against the hme team is just part of the way they enjoy the game.

Stage 1 of Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship Fields International Talent

Taiwan's former 2x World Champion Shin Mei Liu will be one of the tough players seeking out a qualifier spot in the coveted Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship

Manila, Philippines-  Talented female cueists from around the world will be coming to Manila a few days early to take one of the 8 qualifying spots for the Yalin World Championship. It's open to anyone woman willing to take a shot at the world's biggest title in lady's billiards. Players from China, Japan, Taiwan, and Philippines will be the dominant forces in the Stage 1 field fighting their way into Stage 2 to become one of the elite 48 players of the Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship. The matches start this Saturday August 18th and continue on the 19th for a total of 4 qualifying heats.

The Dragon Promotions produced WPA 4th Annual Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship is the most followed women's event of the year. In the host country of the Philippines, it is the biggest female sporting event of the country. The event is supported by Asian table mammoth Yalin Billiards, advanced cue engineer OB Cues, long lasting Championship Tour Edition Cloth, top playing Aramith Balls, and #1 TV network broadcaster ABS-CBN. This year's edition will take place August 20th-24th once again at Robinson's Galleria Mall, which has now become synonymous for creating the dynamic atmosphere of the coveted championship. Robinson's Galleria is connected to the host hotel Crowne Plaza Galleria. An elite 48 world class pros and international women superstars will attend the event to fight it out. "There were a lot of heartbreaks last year as well as glorious triumphs in the qualifying stage 1 at Star Billiards Center. One young teenage player missed the winning 10-Ball to qualify, as well as top tier champions such as Akimi Kajitani of Japan getting through and making it all the way to the top 16. Everyone plays so hard and you wish everyone could qualify. But there will definitely be some heartbreaks again. It's just a part of the game", said Charlie Williams, Dragon Promotions promoter and world renown player and coach.

Other notable players in the qualifiers include Taiwan's Ho Yun Tan, a former World Championship semi-finalist and Japan's Li Jia. Japan has a big contingent including WPBA pro Kyoko Sone and up and comer Noriko Onoda.

The Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship Stage 1 will feature foreign skilled beauties such as Nollie Onoda & Kyoko Sone 

Players that qualify will be paired in groups with the likes of Jasmin Ouschan, Siming Chen, Ga Young Kim, and reigning World Champion Kelly Fisher of the United Kingdom, who will be defending her title against all comers. The comers will be hailing from countries such as Netherlands, China, Iran, Germany, Japan, Belgium, Korea, Australia, Taiwan, France, Philippines, the United States and many more. The best of the best female talents from over 20 countries will be represented at the World Championship.

John Schmidt wins the 2012 World 14.1 Championship, Efren Reyes Settles for Second

Queens, New York-  Europe's dominance of straight pool has ended. John Schmidt of Hesperia, California put USA back on top again in the 100th anniversary tournament of the game. A fitting end for the oldest pool tournament in the world. To do so, Schmidt had to defeat a field of international superstars whom most put well ahead of Schmidt as favorites. Undeterred by critics, Schmidt proved to the world America still has game.


The 2012 Predator World Tournament took place July 29th - August 3rd in New York City. The event was produced by Dragon Promotions & Dr.Michael Fedak.

Some major roadblocks en route to his victory included facing France's Stephan Cohen the 2009 World 14.1 winner; Ralph Eckert of Germany, a former European Champion; and Germany's Thorsten Hohmann, the reigning World Tournament of 14.1 Champion who was Gold in 2006 and 2011. In the finale, Filipino master Efren Reyes waited in the wings. Reyes is a multiple World Champion in 9-Ball, 8-Ball, and One Pocket.

"John has done more than any other American player the past few years in drawing attention to the game. With his videos and 14.1 records in his high run competitions . Of the Americans, he has the most passion for straight pool. On being the world 14.1 champion, all I can say is, welcome to the club," grinned Hohmann. Thorsten could console himself with the overall high run of the event, 141, coincidentally the digits of straight pool.

The final day, Schmidt faced another German in Ralph Eckert, who the day before defeated USA Champion Johnny Archer. Schmidt came on fire running 98 balls in the first half of the match. Eckert mounted a short comeback, but John was too much to handle as he flew around the table running racks in minutes. 

Meanwhile, in the other bracket, Efren Reyes was terrorizing his opponents with his pinpoint cueball control and defense. The Filipino star went undefeated in 9 consecutive matches and pocketing 1250 balls to reach the finals.

USA vs Philippines. For the first time in nearly a decade, no European in the finals. "We really couldn't ask for much more in terms of a huge match-up. An American versus the greatest player of all time. It's a fabulous combo", said Cindy Lee, CEO of Dragon Promotions.

The finals was spectacular. Schmidt came out guns blazing with a lightning fast 107 ball run in 36 minutes. Then unbelievably, Reyes came back with a 112 ball run. Something extremely rare in 14.1 to have two century runs in the same match, let alone the finals. Schmidt came back with a short 20 ball run, and Reyes returned to finish the job. The match had gone back and forth with both players taking over the lead at different points in the 3 hour match. With Efren at the table needing 31 balls, Schmidt would hope for one more chance. And he got it. Efren missed letting Schmidt back needing 37 balls. Schmidt came with a tough off angle combination shot into a pocket partially covered. He slow rolled it in.

Needing 9 balls only, Schmidt faced the biggest breakshot of his life. 

Schmidt fired the final break shot with authority and upon success of it, he slammed the table rail with his hand in partial relief and celebration. He had exercised his demons and overcome the pressure. 

As he made the final ball, Schmidt let out a yell and fist bump as the emotions could no longer be contained. He came over to event promoter Charlie Williams and gave him a big hug as he picked him up off the ground in joy.

In the closing ceremony speech, Efren commented ,"I really thought I was going to win when I ran the 112 balls. I needed some luck. But John played too good! "

John Schmidt's name will be inscribed on the World 14.1 Trophy as the 72nd winner alongside names such as Hohmann, Mizerak, Mosconi, Martin, Greenleaf, Ortmann and the past legends of the game.

The USA has finally gotten to shine back in the limelight of billiards.

BSCP Elections-THE FACTS

I'd like to shed light on the newspaper releases stating Arturo Ilagan's arguments that the recent BSCP elections were not valid. 

On March 5, 2012, the Board of directors confirmed that Perry Mariano, Jaime Chongco and Christine Caparras are members of the BSCP and were in fact present during the oath-taking in front of POC Chairman Cojuanco.

Further to the confirmation of the three members, nine other members were nominated and accepted by the board based on their qualifications and involvement in the billiard industry. The nominated members are:

1.       Jesse Gonzales Cambosa

2.        Bernardo Pinol Jr.

3.       Francisco Bustamante

4.       Dennis Orcollo

5.       Rubilen Amit

6.       Iris Ranola

7.       Reynaldo Grandea

8.       Francisco dela Cruz

9.       Felimon de Leon.

Each one of the nominated members was notified and among all of them, only Francisco dela Cruz refused his nomination into the BSCP.  This brings the membership of the BSCP to 17.  Including the following:

1.       Aristeo Puyat

2.       Mahar Mangahas

3.       Efren Reyes

4.       Arturo Ilagan

5.       Robert Mananquil

6.       Ruben Roque

A petition was submitted to the Chairman from the general membership to call for a special meeting and hold elections in order to address the many issues currently plaguing the association. The letter was dated June 15, 2012 and was signed by 11 out of 17 members of the association. This is over 1/3 of the membership and based on section 2 of BSCP by-laws, this makes it a valid reason to call for a special meeting and elections.

Section 2: Special meetings- Special meetings of the members shall be called as the need thereof arises, by the Board of Trustees or the President or upon petition of 1/3 of the general membership.

Again, 11/17 members signed the petition which therefore makes the special meeting valid.  

After receiving the petition, all the members of the BSCP were given notices of the time and place of the special meeting more than 15 days prior to the date set. There are acknowledgement receipts from all the members including the LBC receipts for the notices sent to the three members who did not sign the petition namely:

1.       Arturo Ilagan Jr.

2.       Robert Mananquil

3.       Ruben Roque

The POC was also given notice of the said meeting and we hold a receiving copy.

In the special meeting held on July 9, 2012, a majority of the members were present. This makes the meeting valid and all decisions made during the meeting shall be deemed valid and official based on Section 4 of the BSCP by-laws which states that:

Section 4: Quorum- A quorum for any meeting of the members shall consist of a majority of the members and a majority of such quorum may decide any question at the meeting, except those matters where the corporation code requires the affirmative vote of a greater proportion.

In the said meeting, 13 out of 17 members were present making any decision made by a majority of those present during the meeting valid.

During said meeting, the members called for the removal of all officials currently serving and for new elections to take place.

 The following members were elected into the board of directors:

1. Mahar Mangahas
2. Perry Mariano
3. Aristeo Puyat
4. Christine Caparras
5. Jimmy Chongco
6. Bernard Piñol Jr.

The newly elected board members then proceeded to elect a set of officers in order to avoid further delays in dealing with urgent matters. The new set of officers were elected as follows:

Chairman: Bernard Piñol Jr.

President: Aristeo G. Puyat

Treasurer: Mahar MAngahas

Secretary General (National): Perry Mariano

Secretarty General (International):  Christine Caparras

Therefore, all arguments raised by Arturo Ilagan stating that the elections were illegal are false. The elections followed every rule in the BSCP by-laws and are therefore valid.
