The Filipino in Real Madrid

No, I didn't mean myself when I said the Filipino in RM although I did visit the club :) I know that many of you have already heard of the Filipino who played for Real Madrid CF. He is widely known mostly just as Teus. Because of all the hoopla surrounding Paulino Alcantara in the past week, I thought I'd share some info on Teus and some photos that I took during a tour of  Santiago Bernabeu.

Full Name: Eduardo Teus Lopez Navarro
Date of Birth: Navember 6, 1896
Place of Birth: Manila, Philippines
Death: Oct. 8, 1958

Position: Goalkeeper
Carrer:  He played for Real Madrid from 1913-1918
He also acted as the Spanish national team's manager from 1941-1942 and was at the helm for 6 international friendlies.

Being a goalkeeper, he might not have looked as impressive as Alcantara who is FCB's top scorer, however, being contemporaries, they played against each other twice with each team getting one win a piece.

However, though Alcantara's record might seem impressive, it's incomparable because Teus was a goalkeeper. I also want to point out that Teus' team in general performed better both during the time period that both of them were playing and throughout history in general. After all, Real Madrid IS the best club of the 20th century :)

Here's the Philippine Flag on display along with all the flags of players who have been part of Real Madrid over the years.

Here's Teus' name under Philippines:

And finally: Just a small section of the trophy display :)

I'll post more stuff when I return from Madrid again in the summer after we win La Liga :)

  1. Thanks for the info.
BTW there's another Filipino who played for FC Barcelona. He's not as famous as his compatriot though. Maybe you can tell us who he is. Thanks again!

  2. Hey there! Yes there were actually two more. One was Manuel Amechazurra and the other one was Juan Garchitorena. Manuel entered the team about a decade before Alacantara whereas Juan entered a few years after Alacantara but had a shorter career. I'm so obviously a RMAD fan so I don't know much about the FCB players but I believe there is some info about them in the museum as well. Maybe next time I'm in Barca I'll check it out. Anyone who has pics and info can contribute here as well :)
